Pulling a Boat VERY close to tow weigh limit Hey all! I am buyingh a boat that is right at 5000# and an additional 400# for trailer. I'm in FL and totally flat towing except pulling it out of the water. Its about 30 feet too with trailer. Question is, if I exceed the 5000# limit can I expect some issues? Has anyone done this yet? Reallly don't want to buy an additional truck. Any thoughts?

You didn't mention if you will be towing at highway speeds or for how long of distances. But as with anything at it's limit, you must be aware of you are at that threshold. If you are just pulling a few miles from your house to the water, you should have no problems. On long distance highway trips, I would keep an eye on the engine temp, and keep the speeds down untill your comfortable with how it performs. Usually the transmision is the weak link on most trucks. If a lot of miles is in the future, a transmision cooler will always help, expectally in Fl. I would keep it out of overdrive while towing on any length trip. I wouldn't expect you to have any troubles.

Thanks so much! I am thinking about mostly 30 miles max, with a few longer ones from orlando to southern FL. May just pick up an old suburban or truck with a little more capacity for this though. Not selling my FJ. Way to much fun! Have a great day. Any other input on this would be helpful!

When I was a kid I pulled a 6000# load around town to the local lakes with a Nissan rated a 3,500#. never had a problem. I decided to go from Southern Michigan to southern Tennesse, the truck never recovered. The lessons we learn from the past.
