Rust

I recently acquired a 1975 FJ40. Beginning to do some restoration; rust isn't too bad but I'm wondering if/how I should prevent rust underneath the truck. It looks as if a coating of some sort has been applied in the past but is peeling off now. Does anyone have any suggestion or recommendations as to if/how I should go about preventing rust from underneath the FJ as the surface is going to only require minor fixes here and there I believe...?

I just bought a '75 FJ40 as well and I have major rust issues. Mine also has what looks like some kind of coating underneath. I have been getting some good info at IH8Mud.com

Sandblasting

I have completely stripped it down to the frame and axles and am planning getting it sandblasted and painted. This is the only thing I can think of to get at the rust. Every post I have gone to has said that rust is like cancer and you have to be very thorough about tackling it. Wish i had a better solution for you, man.

The problem with the old FJ's is that the body will actually rust from behind the paint. By the time you see the paint bubble she's already rusted through. I know because when I bought my 72 I thought I had a steal after closer examination while prepping her for a new paint job I found the sad truth. Good Luck!
