Buying an FJ40

What to look for?

Pricing?

I've noticed huge disparities in asking price, and have watched some on the local Socal craigslists drop prices in half over the past few weeks.

Engine swaps? Front and rear disks? axles? rust? What is worth what?

I see partial restorations that run anywhere from $5000-$15000. Just trying to determine the real value of the vehicle in good running condition, in terms of what it can do and comparison with newer vehicles in those price ranges.

The old FJ's catch my eye, but will it outperform a similarly priced Xterra, Trooper, Montero, etc, off road enough to sacrifice on-road comfort and/or possible mechanical issues?

The only person who should buy one of these is someone who likes to turn a wrench. It will never be comfortable or get good MPG. Trying to compare a 70's or 80's FJ to a 2000+ FJ or Xterra is like comparing a 60's Corvette to 2010 Corvette, totally different beast.

Prices depend on where you live and how many there are so do your research. My 72 is priceless because there are only a handful in the State I live in but I'll never sell it because it has soul.

I have driven comfortable 4X4's and they performed as best as you can get, the AC is nice on hot days and the heater is nice on those cold mornings.
Good gas milage and smooth freeway operation can get you hooked real quick.
For me the off road experience in an open FJ is beyond explaination, there is a real thrill that cannot be communicated, it must be experienced.
Find someone who has such a rig and go on a little jaunt, then you can decide if you want a plush 4X4 or an off road rig like the FJ.
Both are good and depending on what trips you trigger, one is better.
