78 2f in a 72 Does clutch matter?

Howdy, I have a 1972 cruiser with the original 3 speed with a 2f engine from a 78. The vehicle needs a new clutch badly and what i am wondering is this: Is it possible to put the newer style clutch in with the old style 3 speed? Currently, it looks like the engine has the old style clutch and i would like to put in the newer style one because it is $80 less. Or, would there be a problem with the newer clutch and the throwout bearing assembly? Thank a bunch! -Tim
