i have never towed an fj on all fours but i have towed other 4x4 and all wheel drives with a stick shift, on the manual trans fj's you will need to pull out both the front and rear drive shafts and on the auto you will have to pull at least the rear but i would recommend pulling both to remove any doubt. also make sure that the tow bar is designed for the fj and not a tow bar modified from another vehicle unless you don't mind seeing it pass you, I've seen it happen. your best bet (and safest) is to use a tow dolly and remove the rear shaft, this will prevent any unnecessary wear to the trans and avoid any mileage accumulation

Hi Glenn and welcome to the site. There is a disconnect made by Remco you can get for the FJ to allow towing and here's the link with some PDF brocures that should be able to answer your questions. Remco Driveline Disconnect for Towing

We had a Remco on our '02 Nissan Xterra and it worked great for flat towing behind the motorhome. Sold the motorhome and traded the Xterra for the FJ 3 weeks ago...LOVE the FJ!
