Installing a trailer hitch receiver & wiring harness

Hello,

I am new to this forum. My FJ is a 2007 model and I want to purchase and install a trailer hitch receiver and the wiring harness.

My question is how difficult is this job for a person with modest skills and where is the best place to purchase the parts? Is there already a thread that addresses this procedure?

Thanks.

Installing a hitch is a straight forward bolt-in job, typiclly just a four bolt installation. You will have to plug in a adaptor harness for the lights. You can of course get both the hitch and harness from Toyota, but a cheaper way would be one of the many aftermarket companies. Make sure it is for a FJ and not a generic kit. I hope this helps.

trailer hitch help

just bought the Toyota hitch installing kit and it was straight forward. six 12mm bolts to support the hitch, new platic rear bumper cover, wiring harness & mount, cable ties, two 15amp fuses, 0ne relay and one large white contactor.

Problem is the instructions do not show me where the large white contactor installs...help!!!

hitch install

Squid has the manual and shows the white large contactor to be a cenverter and how to locate under the steering wheel adjacent to the clutch pedal...THANKS SQUID!!!

You're the man...the install took two hours with common tools and I also replaced a damaged bumper cap while I was at it.

Kinda too late for Alex but there are nearly always hitches for the FJ for sale on ebay for around $120, Make sure its the Toyota hitch as its nice and small, some of the FJs were equiped with a Reese Hitch which is big and has less clearance under the back.

anyone know where I can get just the wiring harness? The dealer installed the hitch but didn't have the wiring harness.

u-haul

i bought my harness from a u-haul center that just happen to install hitches, if there are any in your that install hitches area it's a good place to look. i can't remember what i paid for it but it was much less than the oem harness.

Just installed mine on the weekend and it was pretty straight forward. Only issues I ran into were disconnecting Backup Sensors (didn't know how to Lock Clips for disconnect) and pulling bumper away from metal body parts (used a plastic clip pry tool - worked like a charm).

I'd do it again - and much much faster second time. Wiring was a no brainer.

Thanks to Squid for manuals. I've also pulled other manuals off the internet, lots of great documentation out there other jobs too.
