Oil change question.

Hey, just changed the oil on my wife's FJ for the first time. Although I really like the fact that the oil filter is on top of the engine and really easy to get to, I wonder if anyone has figured a way not to get oil all over the engine when you take the filter off.

Next time I'll try poking a hole in the top of the filter to allow some of it to drain into the engine.

Any one else try this or have a better trick?

There seems to be a aluminum lip with a fitting underneath the filter. Perhaps you are supposed to pull the cap off and put something under to catch the oil. I didn't try that hard but I couldn't get the cap off.

Thanks,

John

There is a drain

Under the lip that is around the filter, there is a drain hole that is covered by a plastic cover. I bought a piece of clear plastic hose the diameter of the cover. I take off the plastic cover replacing it with the apx. 6" of the plastic hose. I route the hose into a 500ml empty water bottle which wedges easily into the space below the filter housing. (Any small container to catch the oil would work.) When the filter is removed, the oil runs into the housing around the filter and down the little hole, through the hose into the bottle. I wipe up the area around the filter housing before removing the bottle and am careful to use a rag when removing the small hose. No oil anywhere! Just empty the water bottle into your jug of used oil that is sent to the recycling center.

Small water bottle

Take a dasani or other empty bottled water bottle and crush it thinner top to bottom. Slide it up under the drain after removing the rubber plug. It will wedge just fine between the fan housing and cooling hose after you crush the bottle a little thinner and stay in position just fine. WORKS LIKE A CHARM...
