Driving in snow and Ice

Hey guys, new to the forum and new to the FJ!

Love it.

But I've got a question. What's the best combination (4WD Control Lever in H or HL - VSC off or on - A-Trac - RR Diff lock) possible to safely drive in snow covered/ice roads?

I live in the Boulder, Co area and we had a nasty storm yesterday that left a lot of black ice and snow on the ground and it was difficult to figure out what the best combination for the conditions was. I turned the Contol lever to HL and the VSC Off light came up, is that normal? Is that what I want?

I appreciate your answers and know that I am an amateur in 4WD and driving in snow.

Thanks!

Here's what the manual says.

Use the four−wheel drive control lever
to select the following transfer modes.

“H” (high speed position): Lever at “H”
Use this for normal driving on dry hard−
surfaced roads. This position gives greater
economy, quietest ride and least wear.

“HL” (high speed position, center differential
locked): Lever at “HL”
Use this for normal driving on wet, icy or
snow−covered roads.

“N” (neutral position): Lever at “N”
No power is delivered to the wheels. The
vehicle must be stopped.

“LL” (low speed position, center differential
locked): Lever at “LL”
Use this for maximum power and traction.
Use “LL” for climbing or descending steep
hills, off−road driving, and hard pulling in
sand, mud or deep snow.
The center differential lock indicator light
comes on when the “LL” or “HL” mode is
selected.

By the way, Welcome to the site!

Thanks Squid!

Yeah, I read the manual and I figured that much. But then I saw the VSC Off light come on and well, logic says you want the Vehicle Stability Control when driving in Icy contiditions, no?

And what about the TRAC button, it says there that is senses wheelspin in slippery conditions and reduces engine power to the wheels to help to regain traction, but again if you shift the lever to HL, the button gets deactivated and there is no turning it back on!

Like I said, a newby on this type of issues!

thanks!

Let me see what the service manual says about how the systems work and maybe I can explain why it does that. For those interested this is when the VSC is disabled.

The vehicle stability control system automatically
turns off, and the “VSC
OFF” indicator light is illuminated,
when either one of the following conditions
applies:

The transfer is set into “HL” or “LL”
position. (full−time four−wheel drive
models)

The transfer is set into “H4” or “L4”
position. (part−time four−wheel drive
models)

The rear differential is locked. (vehicles
with rear differential lock)

Honestly, I've had this same question since I purchased mine.
I've tried the entire range of options available on the automatic / part time 4x4 model over the course of this winter in various driving conditions on and off road...

And so far have found that when driving ON ROAD, with black ice / snow / wintery mixed conditions that the “H4” position setting (that you can engage while in motion) works best when you take the Active Traction off and is more than adequate to get you where you want to be safely.

I've been able to charge through some pretty wretched conditions with nothing more than that as well!

Actually backed down a steep solid ice / crusty snow driveway at my friends cabin on Saturday that was pushing 25º on the decent angle. And I was only in 4H with the Active Traction off! The FJ crept down it like a spider. I was amazed that we didn't slide even a few inches on the ice! I've also found that when I shifted down out of "D" into 4 and sometimes 3 that I had more than enough power to climb or descend with complete control on bad mountain roads. It's also helpful to get it down into 2 for steeper downhill sections that are especially treacherous, when you can't afford to break.

Hope this helps?
