Found a cool FJ40, what should I offer?

I'm new to the forum, and have a few questions. I recently found an FJ40 in a backyard and had to stop to take a look. I actually saw it and thought it was an older CJ with some kind of hard top, but after stopping to look closer, noticed the "Land Cruiser" on the side. I was able to talk with the homeowner who said her brother was going to take it with him when he moved but didn't; its in her name and she has the title; she doesn't want anything to do with it......etc. She didn't know the year, but said her brother had put a SBC in it, but couldn't figure out the wiring to get it to run.
I stopped back by, but nobody was there so I just got a quick up close look. The rear quarter panels are shot, both rusted through in numerous places. The front clip looks good, didn't look in the engine compartment. From what I could tell, the frame looked pretty good, just some surface rust. Its "listing" to the drivers side for some reason, and I couldn't see why. Interior was FULL of stuff, so it was hard to see, but all the seats are there. Are the rear shackles huge pieces of "C" channel, or is that a PO add on? Besides making sure the frame is not rusted through anywhere, any other FJ problems I should check?
I know its a broad question, but judging by the bad pics, the rusted out quarter panels, and the fact that its not running, what should I offer for an FJ40 in that condition. And any ideas on the year? Thanks for any help!

I'm real new at toyota's but I can tell you I'm not sure I would even consider this one...MOst important is what is under the hood?
real bad the way I see it...as it stands without knowing anything else $1000 would be my top offer and that maybe be high!

I too am new to FJ40, I would guess it is a 1978, 79 or something near to those years, since it has ambulance doors and the rear vent windows. From your description and picture, I would say the truck will be a lot of work to fix-up the rusty tub and some suspension work with it leaning to the driver’s side. If you have the skills and tools to do most of the work yourself, the FJ40 would be a good start if you can get it at a low selling price.

Old school type FJ40’s are an investment of time, money, and craftsmanship and when completed nicely could be a great reflection (to others when you are driving it around) of your dream 4x4. If you buy an FJ40 it should be a commitment to restore and keep it for many years, just like your wife, so it’s an obligation to yourself to either step-up to the plate and play ball or just watch the other guys restored dream FJ40’s pass you by. What will you do?
