FJ not so solid

FJ Cruiser 2008 SE 2008 29.000 miles. Travelling around in south Chile. This week I detected serious cracks under the motor hood. See photos.
Does anyone know about such issues?

This has been discussed many, many times on many, many forums. The fact is you can't take the FJ Cruiser right from the car lot to the playground. It has to be prepared before you play with it. These stress cracks are usually caused by tires pushing up on the wheel wells one too many times. The way to prevent this is to install the appropriate lift kit for the type of off-roading you are going to do. Unfortunately, for you, you now have a body re-alignment problem. You should get it to a body shop and get is straightened out. (NOTE: Toyota will not warranty this condition.) Then get a lift kit installed to prevent it in the future. Good luck to you.

The only off road I did was to start a trip from Texas to the South of Argentina, almost 30.000 miles yet. I suppose the FJ Trail Teams should be able to support road conditions other than the one on paved roads.
I had to do a realignment underway (some 5.000 miles ago) because the right front tire started to wear out on the inner side, but at that moment I didn’t notice the crack problem!
Anyhow here in Chile where they sell the FJ they do not seem to know the ‘crack’ problem. Toyota Chile does not subscribe the warranty of Toyota US!
What would be an appropriate lift kit for the Trail Teams? Thx.

Hmmm....well maybe I shot my mouth off too soon. The tire wearing from the inside could also indicate a suspension problem, but if you say you're not baha-ing with it that negates all I have ever read about the stress crack issue. If you are not going off-road on a regular basis, it would not support the smash and bash theory. Otherwise, I would say a Pro Comp 6" heavy duty suspension package. Maybe Squid or Tannemanuke can shed some lite on it.

Thx. Even simple lift kits are not available here in Chile, maybe in Santiago, they said. Santiago is 700 miles to the North, and with the earthquake situation...?
See www.latinotrails.com our website (in dutch but with a Google translator tool).

The FJ is an awesome off-roader but minor mods are needed from stock. First thing to do to stop things like that from happening is if you haven't got the cash for a lift kit then install "Bump Stops" as a cheaper alternative.

What's causes the cracks or crumpling of the chassis is the wheels slamming into the arches/chassis which causes the cracking/crumpling. Bump Stops should prevent this from happening. Installation is approx $150+

Hope this helps!

I had mine for 88,000 miles and haven't had a problem yet. And I do run it stock (outside of a CAI) off-road. Maybe you just got a lemon.
