Roof rack question

Was hoping someone could help me out. I have the factory roof racks and was wondering how I can remove the crossbar so that I can reposition it elsewhere??? Do I need a special screwdriver?

I want to have two of the cross bars towards the front so I can put my snowboard racks on them. Any help would be muchly appreciated!

I also wanted to do the same(bring the crossbar forward)so I could carry a ladder or a little boat on top but as I loosened the plastic wing nuts on the top side I realized the roof rack tapers out towards the front. Now there is ajustments on the bottom side(star keys) but they only add less than an inch and like I said the rack tapers out towards the doors in the front. The only remedy would be to find another crossbar that is longer than the present one or buy a whole new front composite bar that would clamp onto the round tubes on the sides and then totally remove the middle bar because the roof arches and you couldn't touch all three crossbars at the same time. durfcruiser

Thanks durfcruiser. I didn't even think about how it tapers out towards the front. My main concern right now is really just getting two crossbars on the same level (for my snowboards) and I guess I don't have to move the bars towards the front...although it would have been nice.

Again, thanks for the response!

roof rack

You guys got me thinkin' 'bout that, so I decided to experiment a little. I found that if you remove the forward crossbar, and unscrew the adjusting bolts all the way out, removing the two outward bolts, you can pull the ends out about another 1 1/4 inches. This will be enough to get the crossbar as close as 7 1/4 inches to the back of the wind deflector bracket, putting the bar about 11 inches behind the front of the rack. The sacrifice is one bolt on each side, but you can drill and tap it for more security. I did this and put a 17' aluminum canoe up there, tied it down, and went 50 miles with it at about 60 mph. It was still there at my destination and it wasn't loose or weakened. That's my 2 cents worth.
