Premium Gasoline Required?

I just bought an FJ 8 weeks ago and realized that I am getting carbon build up on my exhaust pipe. With further research, I found out that I really do need to use premium gasoline. Any thoughts on this?
The service manager at the Dealership thinks it might be OK to run the premium gas every other tank.
Let me know what my fellow FJ friends are doing about this! Or, are you just going with the premium gas and not counting pennies???
Thanks from San Antonio Texas.

Been running 87 in ours since October with no problem. I think that the only reason it stated to run premium gas was for an added boost (which you probably couldn't feel anyways) if you were running off-road or doing some towing.

premium

I've run premium for 16 months. A friend of mine has been running regular and has had to replace a muffler and has started using oil. I think the long term effects of regular and potential problems don't override the savings now. Pay me now or pay me dearly later..

Regular at 87/89 octane is OK. I had a Cadillac SRX crossover that said the same thing, and it ran fine on regular unleaded. They label it that way for CYA to keep the literals from sueing them. You should use premium if you plan to pull a trailer, like a boat or camper, or if you are going off-roading. The added HP wil be beneificial to the overall perfomance. As for the carbon, a little chrome polish will take that right off.

hmm

As I will also be purchasing a FJ-Cruiser very soon.. i am curious about the gas usage too. According to some statistic websites, the FJ will get 15 mpg street and 18 highway. This is with premium gas? As stated earlier, can the FJ run with regular 87 octane? Or is it not worth it in the end?

I get that 15-18 range with 87 in my 6 spd stick. May have to try a trip with higher octane just to see if it makes a difference or not.

Cheers,

I've had my '08 SE for about 3 weeks. It has a light bar, and bumper lights, so maybe a little extra drag. Mileage with premium seems to be around 18mpg for my usual routine. This weekend I did a lot of 4-wheeling and got 12mpg. Regarding other fuels, I think the FJ will detune itself to handle any octane, but you pay a price in performance and mileage. The computer will continually try and adjust for best performance. I really don't think I'll go less than 89 octane just because of this.

I have an 08 AT and have been running mid-grade gas since the third week. With 4,000 miles, I am averaging 20.03 overall - city and highway. Believe it or not, premium gas delivered less MPG than the mid-grade.

Barkin out to ya from the Berkshires gettin just over 15 mpg running 93 oct. Don't think I'll be running lower octane judging by some of the results mentioned ealier. Not too bad considering 4 wheel drive was used quite a bit. Sticker said 17/21. Hoping to get into that range by summer. Keep ya posted, Proud owner of an 07 FJ
