| I have had my FJ for 2 months now and running 89 octane, averaging 18.4 miles per gallon with mixed driving. I just got back from a road trip to Misouri and found on the way back my avg was 19.7. My guess is this is due to them not having to use refourmulated gas? Like I have to use in Wisconsin. Any thoughts? |

| I'm torn... My 2007 FJ (6 spd. manual) has been running on 87 octane since January. <The dealer told me 87 would be fine> I've only put 4,500 miles on her and have begun to notice a dark black carbon build-up on the tail pipe. Wondering if this is due to the cheap gas? Will pipe in premium next time around and see if I notice a difference in mpg or driving quality. ![]() I also decided to go Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic for lasting performance on my vehicle. Anyone think this was a stupid move? I figure, every 5,000+ miles or so...buy the Mobil 1 at Costco for $28 per 6 quarts. Pay $15 labor for the oil change... still beats the cheap stuff which I'd be changing every 3-4K miles. ![]() |

Nope, I think you're pretty smart. If you'll send in an oil sample to some place like Blackstone labs (There's a thread here.) you'll be able to find out how long you can run the Mobil1 between changes (After the warranty of coarse) I discovered on my 04 Nissan Titan that I could actually go 13,000 miles between changes. Pretty cool when you drive over 3000 miles a month. |

| Summer gas Just getting back on the gasoline issue. I've started using 89 oct. and I'm getting at least 18mpg, compared to the 15 I was getting months earlier with 93 oct. This is probably due to the detergents they put in winter gas. It also seems that I havn't lost any performance with the lower oct. and there's no pinging in the motor. I don't plan on using high octane anymore unless possibly in the winter. |
