Cold Air Intakes?

I have been toying with the idea of adding a cold air intake to my FJ. I understand the concept of the cold air intake. However, when I looked at the engine compartment of my FJ, I noticed that it already had a CAI -- the engine draws air from a compartment isolated from the main engine allowing it to draw cooler air. Am I correct about that? If so, will an after market CAI improve on the stock CAI? Thanks for any expertise/wisdom you can send my way.

Hi BareNecessity,
Technically you're right, but a new air intake will give you better performance (due to increased airflow) and allow you better access to the engine. I put on a new air intake (aFe Magnum Force) and have been very pleased. I have noticed a definite increase in horsepower and torque - especially towing my little Scamp Trailer. Also, I have noticed an increase in MPG when on highway trips - about an extra mile per gallon. In the city, the MPG is pretty much the same. Also, you will never have to buy a new air filter - the filter that comes with it is guaranteed for like - just clean it and put it back on. Installation instructions were good and the job was easy to do.

Here is the link to the aFe site I ordered mine from. I purchased the one on top.

All in all, I think that it was well worth doing.

Thanks Tommy Boy

Hey, that helped clarify my questions. I'm torn between the AFE Magnum Force that you installed and the True Flow XDI. Both have great reviews and look easy to install.

I'll let you know what I end up going with --

Thanks again for helping me out

And buy an intake with a dry filter. I've had both the Fram Boost (Which is the same as an AEM) and Volant with the Nano Fibre filter and will never go back to an oiled filter.

Squid,
So you just clean them with soap and water and let them dry? That would be a nice option.

That's it. Take it off, clean it, rinse it and then use a little low pressure air to blow the excess water out from the inside out and let her dry.

The Volant powercore uses the Donaldson Nano Fiber Technology www.donaldson.com/en/engine/support/datalibrary/001220.pdf which is the same filters used on the Abrams over in Iraqi and is guaranteed maintenance free for 100,000 miles (I still Clean mine). These filters can go on your existing CAI. http://www.autoanything.com/air-filt...A3649A0A0.aspx

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely get a dry reusable filter. One more question, I'm also considering an exhaust Jack but I don't know the difference between the X-Jack and the Titan. The X-Jack is much more expensive but it looks identical to the Titan. Any thoughts on these? Also, I have a TRD exhaust tip -- will the exhaust jacks fit on the TRD oval tip?

Thanks again
