Seat belt warning chime. (Disable)

I've heard that it is possible to turn off the seat belt warning chimes. This is a good safety device, but it sucks if you have to jump in and make a quick trip down the road. If you go over 10mph, "Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP! BEEP!BEEP! Anybody know the process of turning it off? I could stay below 10mph, but that wouldn't make it too quick of a trip.

All right first off I didn't write this. I got this from a guy Toxarch on the Tundra Site but I figure since they are both Toyota vehicles it'll probably work on the FJ. (Use at your own risk)

This is a very simple thing to do. It takes maybe 5 minutes and that includes taking pictures.

Here's your parts list: 2 small screwdrivers.
You really only need 1 of them. I preferred using 2 because the smaller one is useful for pulling out the spring. A pick will work too. You just need something small.

Look at the seatbelt from the seat side. Where the black part starts, there is a tiny little tab. Hard to see without some light

In this picture, I am pointing at the tab with the screwdriver. I think the camera flash made it dark. It's there, trust me. All you have to do is push it in. You will hear it click when it has disengaged the circuit board housing.

Now from the console side, you have to slide the circuit board housing toward the floor of the truck. It's the big black piece on the console side of the buckle. It slides straight out easily.

See that tiny spring in the middle? That needs to come out. Here is where I used the small screw driver to push the spring up and over the plastic piece holding it. Save the spring if you ever want to put it back in in the future.

Here's a picture of the spring out:

And here's a picture of the removed spring:

Carefully slide the housing back into the seat belt buckle. This was the longest part. You just have to be careful when sliding it back in to get it to line up straight. Just takes a little patience to line it up. When it does, you will be able to slide it in. Just push firmly until it clicks and you are done.

Now I don't have to listen to that seltbelt chime when the dog rides with me. And it will also be nice when I am driving the truck on the ranch during hunting season.

Thanks Squid! I'll do some looking around this weekend. If I remeber correctly, whoever posted it had another approach using on/off key sequences. I dunno I'll look into it and see what I can find out.

Is this fix for the passenger side or either one? Does it have any effect on the airbags?
I just got a new Tundra, love it but that chime is driving me crazy. I go off road at slow speeds, dont want to hook up seat belts. A REAL PIA!

Welcome to the site! It'll work for either and feel free to visit/Join the Tundra site. Here's the link to the seatbelt fix and there's also some info about the airbag warning. They would be better able to answer any questions you may have. How to disable the seatbelt chime - Tundra Truckz

Thanks, Squid. I joined. Got to go back to the dealer one day this week. See if they will disable the passenger side. I WILL do something to stop that driver side chime. This is prolly it.

I did find this on disabling the seat belt chime:

From the off position:
  1. Turn Key to ON
  2. Within 6 seconds, press and HOLD the odometer button
  3. Wait 12-14 seconds (count 1 one-thousand, 2 one-thousand.....)
  4. Buckle your seat belt
  5. Let go of the odometer button and press it again
  6. Wait a few seconds until it clears and goes back to the odometer with your mileage displayed.
or you can try this sequence. I think it is outlined in the manual somewhere.
  1. Press the ODO/TRIP switch until odometer displays "ODO"
  2. Turn the ignition switch "Off"
  3. Turn the ignition switch "On"
  4. Press ODO/TRIP switch immediately (within 6 seconds after turning the power switch on) and hold it down for 10 seconds or more
  5. Continue holding the ODO/TRIP switch and fasten the Passengers seat belt
  6. Check that the odometer displays either "b-on" or "b-off" (it will be "b-on")
  7. Press the ODO/TRIP button to change the display to "b-off"
  8. Turn the ignition switch off.
  9. Turn the ignition switch on while depressing the brake pedal.
  10. Check that no seat belt chime sounds when setting in the front passenger seat.
I am planning on trying these steps this weekend to see if they work. I would try the spring removal, but I really don't want to tamper with something that is supposed to save my life in the event of an accident. I will let ya'll know if this worked or not.

Well I tried to first fix and PRESTO! No more beep. I looked through the manual and couldn't find it either. I got my information from another source other than the manual. I sat in the driver's seat and apparently if you do the fix from there, you also disable the chime for the passenger seat. If anyone with a FJ considers the seat belt chime as a major annoyance, you can remedy your headache using the above procedures.
